Shockwave Therapy
Clinically proven treatment for a variety of musculoskeletal disorders
What is it?
Shockwave therapy or to give it it's full name 'Radial Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy' is our newest addition to the clinic. It uses sound waves to break down fibrous tissue which can occur in muscle and along tendons, ligaments and fascia as a result of injury. It can be used to treat a number of issues from:
-
Tendinopathies including Achilles and Plantar Fasciitis
-
Muscle tension and pain
-
Ligament stiffness
-
Osteoarthritis
-
Dermatological conditions like cellulite
Here comes the science bit!
Shockwave therapy uses compressed air to accelerate a projectile within the hand piece, the tip of which is placed directly at the target point of the trauma or injury. The kinetic energy created by the ballistic ball bearing inside the applicator, travelling at up to 90 Km/h, is converted into a 'shock wave' which propagates through the skin into the underlying tissue. Initially a shearing stress is created inside this tissue which starts to release tension, as the treatment proceeds the shock wave penetrates deeper releasing cavitation bubbles which collapse leading to further secondary shock waves.
Technology you can trust!
Shockwave has been shown to:
-
Increase localised circulation to soft tissue
-
Encourage stem cell activation to start the healing process
-
Be beneficial for professional rugby and football teams
-
Be a very quick treatment - patients feel the difference in minutes
-
Reduce pain in nerve fibres
-
Be effective on more than 100 Million patients treated globally, with multiple randomised controlled trial articles published
